What is Art Therapy?

A cluttered table with magazines, colored pens, scissors, glue sticks, and art supplies in cups. There are magazines about travel, geography, and business, with various colorful pens and brushes in the background.

Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses creative processes such as drawing, painting, collage, or sculpture as a way to explore thoughts, emotions, and personal experiences. Art psychotherapy offers a gentle, non-verbal way to process emotions and can be especially helpful when words are hard to find.

Sessions take place in a calm, confidential, and supportive space where you are encouraged to go at your own pace. Whether you’re experiencing anxiety, low mood, grief, trauma, simply feeling stuck or overwhelmed, art psychotherapy provides a safe environment to reconnect with yourself in a creative and meaningful way.

How can Art Therapy help?

Art Therapy provides a safe and confidential place to share, explore, and make sense of feelings that can be difficult or confusing to put into words. You don’t need to be “good” at art to benefit from art psychotherapy. The focus is not on creating something perfect or polished. The focus is on your creative process, what emerges, how it feels, and what it might represent. It is suitable for people of all ages and abilities, and can support a wide range of emotional, psychological, and social needs.

Art therapy can help address a wide range of psychological, emotional, and physical challenges. This can include:
